World Water Day 2020 is about water and climate change. These two are inextricably linked. Using water efficiently will reduce greenhouse gases.
5 water actions anyone, anywhere can do everyone can take to address climate change :
Take a shorter shower
Shortening the length of showers can save water significantly.
Similarly, when you brush your teeth, fill the cup with water instead of keeping the tap on.
Choose a plant-based meal
On average it takes between 15,000 and 20,000 litres of water to produce one kilogram of beef, which works out to approximately 3,000 litres of water to produce one 200g beef burger – the equivalent of 30 x 5-minute showers. (1x 200g beef burger = 30x 5-minute showers).
A meat-free diet can cut our water footprint in half!
Turn off your sleeping tech
Turn off tech you are not using. 90% of power generation is water-intensive. By powering down our devices when we’re not using them, the less energy needs to be produced.
Don’t throw away edible food
An estimated 1/3 of all food produced globally is lost or goes to waste. Reducing your food wastage reduces demand on agriculture which is one of the biggest water consumers.
Shop sustainably
Sourcing our goods from responsible sources can have a big impact on the consumption of water and other essential resources.
A typical pair of jeans takes 10,000 litres of water to produce, equal to what a person drinks in 10 years.
