Got a stash of reusable shopping bags collected from well-meaning shopping trips ? Now is a good time to declutter !
In an effort to stop using plastic bags, we’ve accumulated countless reusable ones. Does that sound familiar? Most of us have more reusable bags than we’ll ever need. At the same time, we don’t know what what to do with them. So here are some ways we can do :
1. Donate & Share Bags with others
You can sort reusable bags by category of activity, depending on the use of the bags. For example, some bags may be for carrying food and groceries (including insulated bags) , while others are for books, clothes or whatever else you use them for. From each category, you can keep the sturdiest and prettiest bags that you’ve got that you enjoy using.
Once you’ve decided which bags to donate, make sure those bags are washed, clean and still in usable condition. You can check several initiatives that currently running :
The Bounce Bag Initiative By PlasticLiteSG
If you live in Singapore, CitySprout, together with Plastic Lite SG, are introducing the Bounce Bags Initiative for the upcoming Farm Day Out event!
From now on until 9th April 2021, you can drop off your reusable bags (in usable condition) at Sprout Hub F&B area (102 Henderson Road). These bags will then be made available for guests to use during the Farm Day Out Easter edition event (10th – 11th April 2021)!
2. Bundle It With Your Food Donation
Thinking to donate some unopened foods or groceries to nearby community kitchen or food banks ? You can use reusable bags to bring food donations instead of disposable ones so the bags can be passed along to patrons. If your supermarket has a food bank box, donate extra reusable grocery bags there.
3. Gift Bag Replacement
Use them in lieu of gift bags when bringing gifts of food to friends and family
4. Upcycle Them
Last but not least, you can up-cycle some of your reusable bags into something new with minimised new materials. From little coin purse that won’t cost you anything but a little time, basic sewing skill and zipper to woven placemats or table runners. The sky’s the limit.
5. Stop The Accumulation
As they said “Prevention is the best cure“, we can try not to let too many new reusable bags into our home. Do whatever it takes to remember to bring them to the store (tie them to your purse or doorknob, place them on the floor in front of the front door, or set a calendar reminder) so you don’t have to buy a new one.
