What is a “reasonable’ living wage ?
An October 2021 study conducted by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy shared that S$2,906 is a “reasonable” starting point for a living wage in Singapore.
A family of four needs at least $6,426 a month to afford a basic standard of living. A family of two, with a single parent and a toddler or preschooler needs $3,218 a month.
About 30% of working households do not earn enough to meet these needs.
The panel will discuss the living wage parameters and implications; its implementation in Singapore; recommended steps to ensure living wage and wage/class inequality in Singapore.
Are the needs of caregivers being overlooked?
Women usually face the double burden of juggling work and domestic chores. In 2020, the Ministry of Manpower reported that 37.3% of women cited housework and childcare as the main reasons why they are not working or looking for work.
Women may face challenges in finding sustainable employment due to difficulties in finding suitable childcare services conveniently located, aligned to their work hours and equipped to meet their children’s needs.
The panelists will delve into discussions on the gendered division of labour and care work; the overlooked needs of caregivers and how we can alleviate caregivers’ burden.
Is there digital inclusion or digital divide in Singapore ?
According to Roland Bergers Digital Inclusion Index 2020, Singapore ranks top for digital inclusiveness.
A survey conducted last year by South Central Family Service Centre suggested that 21% of the households surveyed with children below the age of 18 did not have internet connection at home, and 39% did not have laptops, PCs or tablets.
As Singapore continues to digitalise, it’s imperative that nobody gets left behind in the process. This last panel will thus discuss how the Covid-19 pandemic has deepened the digital exclusivity for low-income families and explore ways to make digital access universal.
