Coral Reef Mapping : Where Natural Adventures Abound
Recent satellite imagery has unexpectedly revealed an additional 64,000 square kilometers of coral, roughly equivalent to the size of Ireland, bringing the total global coral coverage to an impressive 348,000 square kilometers. Despite constituting only 0.1% of the Earth’s ocean area, these ecosystems are indispensable, supporting an estimated 25-40% of all marine species, protecting coastlines, and sustaining the livelihoods of millions around the world.
A recent study by the team at Slingo has quantified the allure of the wild, assigning an ‘adventure score’ to countries based on their natural wonders—volcanoes, coral reefs, and waterfalls. The findings offer a roadmap for the ultimate adventure holiday.
Coral reefs, though occupying less than 1% of the ocean floor, are bustling marine metropolises, home to over 25% of all marine species. For wildlife enthusiasts, these vibrant underwater ecosystems are a must-visit. Teeming with whales, sea turtles, and myriad fish species, coral reefs are not just stunning; they are crucial biodiversity hotspots.
