While menstruation is a normal and natural process, 80 million people who menstruate in Indonesia are still facing stigmas and taboos around menstruation. So while the year of 2021 might be over soon, the world of women empowerment just keeps getting better and better. The ride’s is not over yet, this female-led startup, Perfect Fit is launching the first period-proof underwear innovation made in Indonesia.

RELEVANT SUSTAINABLE GOALS

Perfect Fit Indonesia

Perfect Fit is a start-up that focuses on women in getting better menstrual health through eco-friendly products and education. After working in the field of women’s empowerment for almost four years, two young Indonesian women founded this company, Tungga Dewi and Riesa Putri. Perfect Fit seeks to provide women with environmentally friendly menstrual products and information on reproductive health, women’s rights, and environmental sustainability.
With period products and period positive education, Perfect Fit supports menstruators (women, trans, non-binary). The project began in 2018 in East Nusa Tenggara, educating women and girls on menstruation as well as making reusable menstrual pads with the local women. Perfect Fit officially registered as a start-up in September 2020, aiming to change the way women manage their periods while protecting the environment and empowering communities.
There are very few innovations in the field of menstruation. In fact, menstruation is a very important part of a woman’s life,” said Tungga Dewi, Co-Founder & CEO of Perfect Fit. “Imagine nearly 40 years of women experiencing menstruation every month, but why is this issue rarely discussed?” continued Tungga Dewi who wanted Perfect Fit to be here to break the taboo on menstrual health through innovative products and education on reproductive health.

Period-Proof Underwear, The First Kind in Indonesia

The BPS (2019) reports that there are 80 million Indonesian women in reproductive age (10-49 years). Indonesian women are still predominantly using disposable sanitary napkins when menstruating. Concerns about disposable sanitary napkins center around two main issues: health problems caused by chlorine and environmental issues caused by the plastics within the product. Perfect Fit tries to bring about a safe and environmentally friendly menstrual revolution with period proof underwear or anti-translucent menstrual panties.

The Perfect Fit pants are designed to mimic the shape of most underwear by incorporating a special layer in the middle to absorb liquid and prevent leaks. Perfect Fit products can absorb up to 20 ml of liquid or the equivalent of four disposable sanitary napkins.
Our products are safe because they use materials that are free of hazardous chemicals (OEKO Tex Certified) and are environmentally friendly because they can be used for 2-3 years, thereby reducing waste,” said Tungga.
It’s time, women have more access to products that are comfortable, innovative, but still take care of our earth” she continued. Perfect Fit products are made in Indonesia and now are available on major e-commerce platforms and marketplaces, such as Tokopedia.

‘Buy One Give One’ Model To Tackle Period Poverty In Indonesia

As described by Perfect Fit, menstrual poverty exists when women lack access to menstrual products and knowledge about menstruation. It can prevent adolescent girls from attending school and adult women from carrying out their daily activities, thus preventing them from reaching their full potential.

It's time, women have more access to products that are comfortable, innovative, but still take care of our earth

To tackle this situation, Perfect Fit applies “Buy One Give One” model. Every purchase of a menstrual product from them will result in the donation of another to women in remote areas. By doing this, Perfect Fit is reducing the condition of period poverty or menstrual poverty in Indonesia.
