Pandemic and HBL Reveal A ‘Digital Divide’, But Engineering Good Is Bridging The Gap

The recent home-based learning (HBL) have once again revealed digital inequality in Singapore. Engineering good aims to bridge this digital divide.
The move to home-based learning (HBL) for Primary 1. to 5 students from Sept 27 until the end of Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) sitting on Oct 6 has once again highlighted Singapore’s ‘digital divide’ which many households nationwide not having access to a computer, or a device.

COMPUTERS AGAINST COVID BY ENGINEERING GOOD 

Computers Against Covid is an initiative launched by Engineering Good, a Singapore-based charity that works to empower inclusivity for disadvantaged communities through sustainable engineering and technology solutions. Computers Against Covid aims to collect, refurbish and distribute used laptops to families who do not have access to these devices to stay digitally connected. These laptops are used for children’s home-based learning needs. Adults and the elderly also use these laptops to support their search for employment to access online job databases and social engagements.
Engineering Good has distributed more than 5,000 laptops via a network of 160+ community partners and is still trying to fulfill requests at an average of 150-200 laptops a month.

4. Android tablets & phones (manufactured from 2017 onwards)
5. ipads & iphones (𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝) with lighting/USB-C charging ports
6. Solid State Hard Drives (SSDs)
7. Laptop bags
8. Wired (USB) mice & keyboards
9. USB Headsets
10. USB webcams
Since Engineering Good refurbishes donated laptops, many of them come with parts that are beyond repair, and have to be replaced. Engineering Good also accept laptop accessories, including
