Nexus for Development and Agros Set Benchmark for High-Integrity, Community-Based Carbon.
Indonesia has become the launchpad for Southeast Asia’s first carbon credit project centered on solar irrigation pumps, as Nexus for Development signs a new agreement with Agros Indonesia aimed at delivering verifiable emissions reductions while strengthening smallholder livelihoods.

The initiative marks one of the first community-based carbon projects in Indonesia since the country reopened its carbon markets in 2025. It also reflects rising global demand for climate solutions that combine measurable greenhouse gas reductions with tangible economic benefits on the ground.

At a time when carbon markets face increasing scrutiny over credibility and impact, the project positions itself as a model for scale, integrity and long-term value.

RELEVANT SUSTAINABLE GOALS

Solar Irrigation Pumps as a Climate and Income Solution

Agros, known for pioneering sustainable farming solutions, has focused on scaling solar irrigation pumps as a hardware technology tailored for small farmers. The systems replace traditional diesel and gasoline-powered irrigation machinery, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while lowering operational costs.

This community-based carbon project structure is designed to achieve two outcomes at once: cutting greenhouse gas emissions and increasing income for smallholder farmers.

Globally, solar pumps are increasingly recognized as the first pure productive-use appliance to reach scale in emerging markets. Their adoption has been supported by end-user financing models and strengthened by carbon revenues and targeted subsidies.

By embedding carbon finance into agricultural infrastructure, the project creates a direct link between climate mitigation and rural economic development.

Building Carbon Credits for Scale and Integrity

Nexus for Development, previously a long-term financing partner of Agros, is leading the carbon project structuring, methodology selection and market positioning.

The organization’s role is to ensure the project meets evolving buyer expectations regarding additionality, monitoring standards and long-term credit quality. At the same time, it is designed to remain scalable for thousands of smallholder farmers

“Carbon finance only works when it’s designed for the long term,” said Laura Alsenas, Executive Director of Nexus for Development. “This project reflects our deep technical expertise in community-based methodologies and our focus on building carbon assets that are credible, investable and resilient as markets evolve.”
The emphasis on additionality and monitoring addresses growing calls for stronger integrity standards across voluntary and compliance carbon markets.

From Growth Loans to Carbon Development

The carbon agreement builds on a multi-year partnership between Nexus for Development and Agros.

Through the Pioneer Facility, Nexus previously provided two growth loans to Agros, both of which were fully repaid. Those loans supported Agros’ early expansion.

The transition from debt financing to carbon project development demonstrates Nexus’ strategy of deploying different climate finance instruments at various stages of a partner’s growth

“Working with Nexus means carbon is integrated into our business model, not bolted on,” said Max Nelen, CEO of Agros. “Their expertise gives us confidence that this project will stand up to scrutiny while enabling faster, farmer-centered scale.”

A Signal for Indonesia’s Reopened Carbon Market

As Indonesia’s carbon markets reopen, the Nexus–Agros initiative signals a broader shift toward community-based projects aligned with Article 6 principles.

Rather than focusing solely on large-scale industrial mitigation, the project channels climate finance directly to farming communities, creating immediate benefits while contributing to national and global climate objectives.

For Nexus for Development, the partnership reinforces its role as a long-term carbon partner combining technical expertise, capital and local execution.

For Agros, it embeds carbon finance within its operational model, supporting expansion while maintaining credibility in a rapidly evolving market.

The launch of Southeast Asia’s first solar irrigation carbon project may mark the beginning of a new phase for Indonesia’s carbon ecosystem — one rooted in measurable impact, scalable design and community-level transformation.
