Kamojang Geothermal Power Plant becomes the first geothermal power plant to produce green hydrogen in ASEAN.
The Kamojang Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP Kamojang) marks a significant milestone as ASEAN’s inaugural green hydrogen producer, utilizing geothermal energy. Spearheaded by PT PLN, Indonesia’s state electricity firm, its 22nd Green Hydrogen Plant (GHP) now fuels the Senayan Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS), a pioneering facility in the region. This initiative harnesses the byproduct water from electricity generation at PLTP Kamojang, setting a precedent for green hydrogen production expansion.
RELEVANT SUSTAINABLE GOALS
Darmawan Prasodjo, PLN’s President Director, emphasized the company’s drive towards an integrated hydrogen ecosystem, highlighting the GHP’s addition at Kamojang, which bolsters production by approximately 4.3 tons annually. PLN’s network of 22 GHPs now collectively generates 203 tons of green hydrogen yearly, serving both power plant operations and the burgeoning hydrogen vehicle ecosystem. This strategy is poised to fuel 438 vehicles annually, significantly reducing fossil fuel dependence.
PLN’s ambitious project includes the inaugural HRS in Jakarta’s Senayan, offering a cost-effective fuel alternative at approximately Rp276 per kilometer—vastly undercutting fossil fuel costs. The initiative aligns with competitive electric vehicle charging rates and is supplemented by educational and training hubs, like the Hydrogen Center and Gallery Room in Senayan, showcasing PLN’s commitment to innovative, renewable energy solutions.
This leap towards green hydrogen, underscored by a 3-year trial at the Senayan HRS, aims to transform Indonesia’s energy landscape, potentially setting a precedent for ASEAN’s sustainable energy future and contributing to a significant reduction in carbon emissions.
