In the bustling heart of Mojokerto, East Java, a transformative movement is underway, courtesy of Kelompok Sulam Majapahit Indonesia (Kesuma Indonesia). This initiative, born from the collective vision of four entrepreneurs, including the dynamic Febrina Bayurini, in 2019, traces its roots to the Mojokerto Creative Crafters—a community of artisans founded in 2013. What started as a shared passion for the intricate art of embroidery has evolved into a powerful force for empowering women and persons with disabilities, challenging societal norms, and championing sustainable craftsmanship.

RELEVANT SUSTAINABLE GOALS

Empowerment Through The Needle’s Eye

At its core, Kesuma Indonesia was founded with a dual mission : to offer married women as well as stay-at-home mothers re-entering the workforce, a pathway to overcome the barriers of age and marital status, and to create opportunities for persons with disabilities, who are often marginalized in the job market. By providing free embroidery training and facilitating remote work opportunities, Kesuma Indonesia has not only equipped its members with valuable skills but also granted them the flexibility to balance work with family responsibilities.
However, the path has not been without its challenges. Issues such as quality control and expanding market reach, especially beyond local confines and social media platforms, remain significant hurdles. Yet, the group’s dedication to empowering its members through the mastery of embroidery remains steadfast.

Building More Than Just Skills

Kesuma Indonesia’s commitment extends beyond mere training; it’s about fostering a community. Through partnerships with government initiatives and advocacy for inclusive employment policies, Kesuma Indonesia is not merely teaching a craft but also showcasing the talents and potential of its members. Their efforts to promote entrepreneurship and advocate for fair compensation reflect a deep understanding of the economic challenges their members face.
The group’s involvement in the #PerempuanSemua Mentorship program, organized by Grab, epitomizes this ethos. This collaboration has been pivotal in enhancing Kesuma Indonesia’s business acumen, from marketing strategies to financial management, thus strengthening its foundation and broadening its impact.

Bridging Accessibility Gaps in Embroidery

In tackling the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities, Kesuma Indonesia has embraced an innovative approach. By customizing communication methods and meeting schedules, the group ensures that all members, regardless of physical abilities, can contribute meaningfully. This adaptability not only fosters a sense of belonging but also underscores the belief that creativity knows no bounds.

Weaving Sustainability into Every Stitch

Kesuma Indonesia’s commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in its choice of materials and projects. By adopting “Wastra Nusantara” fabrics and exploring initiatives to repurpose textile waste, the group is making a bold statement: sustainability and cultural preservation are integral to their craft. This commitment not only enhances the cultural value of their products but also aligns with broader environmental goals, positioning Kesuma Indonesia at the forefront of sustainable craftsmanship.
Recognizing that real change requires active community involvement, Kesuma Indonesia is committed to educating consumers about the ethical and environmental significance of their purchases. Through collaborations with both governmental and non-governmental organizations, the group is raising awareness about the importance of supporting ethical, sustainable crafts. Their vision extends to fostering a broader consciousness about sustainability, aiming to inspire a shift towards more mindful consumerism.

This proves that sustainable solutions and community well-being can indeed coexist harmoniously.
