Our plastic pollution crisis is too big for recycling to fix. It’stime to #actforthefuture #bergerakuntukmasadepan
East Ventures and Temasek Foundation have officially launched the Climate Impact Innovations Challenge 2023 competition at Hutan Kota by Plataran, Jakarta on Wednesday, March 1, 2023. This is the largest climate technology innovation event in Indonesia, and it provides a platform for innovators to showcase their sustainable innovations and develop them for commercial purposes.
RELEVANT SUSTAINABLE GOALS
During the event, Lim Hock Chuan, Head Programmes of Temasek Foundation in Jakarta, explained that CIIC provides an opportunity for technology innovators to present their sustainable ideas and to develop them for commercial purposes. Wilson Cuaca, Co-Founder and Managing Partner East Ventures, also discussed the challenges faced by Southeast Asia, including climate change and the need to transition to renewable energy and mobility.
Climate Impact Innovations Challenge 2023
According to a report released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in June 2022, children in Southeast Asia will experience more extreme climate events, increased health and economic losses, and reduced agricultural production due to rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions caused by global warming. The report reveals that if the world warms by 1.5°C, a 10-year-old child in 2020 will experience four times as many extreme climate events throughout their lifetime compared to a 55-year-old.
The increasing frequency and intensity of rainstorms, heatwaves, droughts, and rising sea levels pose a significant threat to Southeast Asia’s agricultural economy and low-lying coastal areas.
To address these issues, Against this backdrop East Ventures and Temasek Foundation launched the Climate Impact Innovations Challenge (CIIC). CIIC is a platform that connects investors and entrepreneurs with innovative solutions to tackle the most significant problems facing tropical cities in the 21st century.
Key Areas
The CIIC 2023 has set its focus on four key ecological tracks, namely:
- Renewable Energy: New ideas, innovations, and technologies that can disrupt how we generate and enable better adoption and distribution of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency in a low-cost and inclusive manner for urban and rural communities.
- Food and Agriculture: New innovative solutions to transform and improve the way we plant, produce and distribute our foods more sustainably, with methodologies and solutions that help to improve affordability, access, nutrients, as well as reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and waste, thereby, ensuring food security in both urban and rural communities.
- Mobility: New ideas as new services, platforms, and technologies to support the growing demand for sustainable mobility and supply chains.
- Ocean: Innovative solutions to utilize marine resources sustainably to ensure the welfare of coastal communities.
The Climate Impact Innovations Challenge will go through several main agendas until September 2023, which include:
- Open Application (1 March 2023 – 26 May 2023)
- Application Review (27 May 2023 – 24 June 2023),
- Announcement of 12 Finalists (June 2023),
- Mentorship (July 2023), and
