You probably don’t think much about washing your hands, but it saves lives.
SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign has the goal of ‘bring people together’ in support of hand hygiene improvement worldwide, while continuing to maintain a global profile on hand hygiene.
WHO encourages all to be inspired by the worldwide movement to achieve universal health coverage (UHC), which entails ensuring optimal health and well-being for all people at all ages, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health services, and safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all. The importance of hand hygiene in infection prevention and control, as well as quality of care and patient safety across all levels of the health system, is crucial to achieving UHC.

HAND HYGIENE DAY 2022
Hand hygiene is very important to all of us and something that should be continually taught and practiced. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), teaching people about handwashing helps them and their communities stay healthy.
When the community is educated about hand hygiene it :
- Reduces the number of people who get sick with diarrhea by 23–40%
- Reduces diarrheal illness in people with weakened immune systems by 58%
- Reduces respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16–21%
- Reduces absenteeism due to gastrointestinal illness in schoolchildren by 29–57%

This year WHO have came up with many ideas and products for each of us to get involved in World Hand Hygiene Day!
These are for all those with an interest in participating in and celebrating World Hand Hygiene Day 2022 :
- Promote the concept, actions and products related to 5 May 2022 by using the slides included in the advocacy presentation and annual campaign toolkit.
- Show your facility’s commitment to hand hygiene improvement at the point of care. Sign up for the Save Lives: Clean Your Hands campaign – we need more and more health care organizations to show their commitment to the campaign, so do encourage others to register.
- Display the 2022 campaign banner and posters on your facility’s walls. Download the campaign posters, email signature strips, the Zoom background and other resources, to help you show your support. All campaign assets can be accessed here.
