European Union Social DigiThon. Inviting every digital enthusiasts with passion on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion to participate in the first ever European Union’s (Indonesia) Social DigiThon.
The continued Covid-19 pandemic has changed people’s life in profound ways. The elderly, children, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups in society also faced increased socio-economic challenges in society as the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded. Women are facing disproportionate impacts of inequality, with increasing household workload and additional coaching of school-aged children. The crisis has also shifted society’s interaction towards the digital realm, and this transition is considered key to global future prosperity and resilience, including the EU region and Indonesia.
EU Social Digithon
EU Social DigiThon is a creative and digital-based platform to facilitate civic activism using digital technology. It aims to explore the link between digital information and technology and the particular solution to social and human rights issues arising from the Covid-19 Pandemic. This initiative is also an endeavor to be a strategic platform to ignite youth’s involvement to creative approaches in tackling issues experienced by vulnerable groups, through digital based technology.
The EU Delegation to Indonesia seeks to explore the link between digital information and technology and the particular resolution to social and human rights issues arising from the Covid-19 Pandemic. Thus, this Social DigiThon is a strategic platform to ignite youth’s involvement to creative and innovative approaches in tackling issues of social and human rights faced by women, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups, through digital based technology.
Design creative digital-based prototype ideas that respond to the social and human rights issues and challenges faced by vulnerable groups in Indonesia, including women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, in the Covid-19 pandemic.

AREA OF FOCUS
Children and Youths
Some of the current situations under this area includes:
- Child marriages on rise in Indonesia as COVID-19 deepen desperation for poverty stricken families (Straits Times, October 2020).
- Children and youths’ access to education has been disrupted as a result of physical distancing measures. Furthermore, children are also prone to heightened levels of anxiety, fear, and worry (The Jakarta Post, June 2020).
Women and Girls
Some of the current situations under this area includes:
- Growing evidence shows that the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with an increase in gender-based violence (sexual and physical) against women and girls in Indonesia (UNFPA, June 2020).
- The pandemic-induced poverty surge have also widen the gender poverty gap – meaning more women will be pushed into extreme poverty than men (UN Women, September 2020).
People With Disabilities
Some of the current situations under this area includes:
- Online teaching platforms and applications do not always cater to a diversity of abilities and often made learning from home more difficult for students (Australia Indonesia research, October 2020).
- A recent survey from the Indonesia Disability Network (JDI) showed that only around 60% of people with disabilities had adequate access to information about COVID-19 and how to avoid infection (The Jakarta Post, June 2020).
Participants will need to explain how their concept note will respond to address any of the priority area of focus listed above, and how The EU Social DigiThon reward would allow the participants to build on this work.
