The Organic Farming Methods Behind Adan Krayan Rice

Adan Krayan rice is no ordinary staple; it is a premium organic product grown without the use of any chemicals, from planting to harvest. The rice comes in three prized varieties: white, red, and black. Despite its newfound fame, Adan Krayan remains rooted in the Krayan highlands, where the specific soil composition and climate create the perfect conditions for this rice to thrive—conditions that cannot be replicated elsewhere, as studies have shown.
The cultivation of Adan Krayan rice is a labor of love, with farmers harvesting only once a year. The fields are left fallow and naturally fertilized by water buffalo, contributing to the soil’s fertility. This traditional farming method, passed down through generations, ensures that the rice remains chemical-free and of the highest quality.

From Local Staple to Global Delicacy

Given its unique characteristics, it is no surprise that Adan Krayan rice has become a favorite not only in Brunei but also in Malaysia, where it is sometimes sold under the name “Borneo Rice.” The geographical proximity of Krayan to the Malaysian border has led to the rice being mistakenly claimed by Malaysia in the past. However, to protect its heritage, Adan Krayan rice was granted a Geographical Indication (GI) certificate by Indonesia’s Directorate General of Intellectual Property in 2012.
The GI certification process was a significant achievement for the local community, who had to meticulously document the unique qualities of Adan Krayan rice. The certification not only safeguards the rice’s identity but also helps to ensure that the benefits of its sale return to the local farmers.
Adan Krayan rice’s appeal lies in its distinct qualities—its fluffy, aromatic grains and rich flavor. These attributes have won it a devoted following, including Brunei’s Sultan. But its journey from a humble local crop to an internationally recognized delicacy also tells a larger story of cultural pride, traditional farming, and the importance of protecting indigenous products in an increasingly globalized world.

As demand grows, so does the importance of ensuring that Adan Krayan rice remains true to its roots, providing both a livelihood for the people of Krayan and a taste of Kalimantan’s rich agricultural legacy to the world.
