The latest project, implemented in Tanjung Palas, East Dumai, marks another milestone in the company’s “Self-Reliant Energy Village” (Desa Energi Berdikari) program.
In a significant move towards sustainable development and energy transition, Indonesia’s state-owned energy company Pertamina Group is bringing solar power to rural communities, supporting local agricultural initiatives. The latest project, implemented in Tanjung Palas, East Dumai, marks another milestone in the company’s “Self-Reliant Energy Village” (Desa Energi Berdikari) program.
RELEVANT SUSTAINABLE GOALS
Desa Energi Berdikari Program
On July 9, Pertamina’s subsidiaries PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) – Dumai Unit and Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (NRE) symbolically handed over an off-grid solar power system to a local hydroponic farming group. The 2.2 kWp system, complete with a 5 kWh battery storage, aims to empower the “Mother and Child Health” (Sehati) group in their agricultural endeavors.
This initiative in Dumai adds to Pertamina Group’s growing list of renewable energy installations across Indonesia, including similar projects in Tanggamus Lampung, Muara Enim, Bali, Aceh, and dozens of other villages. These efforts align with the company’s vision of creating self-reliant energy villages throughout the archipelago.
Dicky Septriadi, Corporate Secretary of Pertamina NRE, emphasized the company’s commitment to involving communities and Pertamina Group in actively developing renewable energy. “We’re proud of this collaboration and hope to support more locations in utilizing renewable energy while educating communities about energy transition,” Septriadi stated on July 13, 2024.
Agustiawan, Area Manager for Communication, Relations, & CSR at PT KPI Dumai Unit, highlighted that Pertamina Group has already established three solar power units across Dumai City. He expressed hope that these installations would be well-maintained to ensure long-term benefits for the community.
Clean energy use in hydroponic farming
Local officials have welcomed the initiative. Zainur, the East Dumai sub-district head, praised the project for its potential to enhance knowledge about clean energy use in hydroponic farming and its positive impact on the local economy.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at PT Pertamina (Persero), underscored that this effort reflects Pertamina Group’s commitment to promoting energy transition and raising public awareness about emission reduction. “Pertamina invites all parties, including the public, to participate in decarbonization efforts, including the use of renewable energy. This program not only helps maintain environmental balance but also assists communities in advancing their economies,” Santoso explained.
The focus on supporting hydroponic farming is particularly timely. This modern agricultural method, which maximizes small spaces for cultivation, has gained popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic, offering additional income opportunities for many Indonesians.
As Pertamina Group continues to expand its renewable energy initiatives across rural Indonesia, these projects stand as a testament to the potential of integrating sustainable energy solutions with local economic development, particularly in the agricultural sector.
